    2. Announcement of Results

      The Department of Psychology held a Logo Design Competition in December 2011 - January 2012 and invited all our current students and alumni to design a logo for our 30th anniversary celebration. The 1st prize winner’s logo design will be used for publicity purpose. Congratulations to the following awardees! Presentation of prizes will be held during our Mini Conference on 19 May 2012 (Saturday) at Cheng Yu Tung Building.

      1st Prize:

      1st Prize
      Awardee: Miss Wu Sze Ming (Udg/Year 1)
      Description:
      Clear and easy to understand is of paramount importance for a logo. Therefore, my design is easy for people to understand that it is about the 30 anniversary of the psychology department. Also, there is a heart between the ‘PSY’ and ‘30’ so as to emphasize that it is about psychology.

      2nd Prize

      2nd Prize
      Awardee: Miss Grace Wong (Alumnus/2011)
      Description:

      “心”字是代表心理系,亦是由psyc 4個英文字母組成,30代表30週年,心與30之間形成了一個心形,代表各師生心繫中大心理30戴。

      (Original in Chinese only)

      3rd Prize

      3rd Prize
      Awardee: Miss Lau Yann Ling (Udg/Year 2)
      Description:

      Being the best in Asia, our department is undoubtedly the pioneer in exploring the Psychology of Chinese People, a field largely unknown to the west. Given so, I designed the logo in form of a Chinese stamp to remind us of the important mission our department is bearing.

      What is more, the dragon in the logo not only echoes with the Year of the Dragon, it also signifies our cultural identity as the "龍的傳人", reminding us not to forget our distinctiveness when the world is dominated by Western Psychology.

      As seen in the logo, the tail of the dragon is the symbol of Psychology, which is originated from the west. It implies that while being distinct, we should also learn from others and remain humble as always.

International Conference (May 19, 2012)

The International Conference will take place in LT1 of the new Cheng Yu Tung Building at CUHK campus (on the other side of the University MTR Station) on 19th May 2012 from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The main theme of the conference is "Chinese Voice in Psychology", which has to do with exploring how doing psychology in a Chinese context contributes to deeper understanding of not only Chinese psychology but also broader humanity. For this purpose we have invited several internationally renowned psychologists with a crosscultural perspective to deliver talks at our Conference. The Conference features two keynote talks by Prof. Kang Lee (morning) and Prof. Chi Yue Chiu (afternoon), on children's lying behaviour and cross-cultural psychology respectively. We also have symposium and panel discussions led by our alumni from different cohorts who are professional psychologists now holding academic positions around the world.

The Mini Conference is supplemented by concurrent activities at other venues in the building, such as the admission and career talks for students. You may be particularly interested in the poster presentation session which runs from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in the main Foyer. Our final year undergraduates would present their theses as posters, which perhaps would give you a sense of how our current undergraduates are doing in terms of research work. A light lunch will be served from noon to 2:00 pm.

Psychology Alumni Fund

For PSY-Connection Award

2012 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Psychology. Many of you have excelled in careers in psychology or in other fields. Your studies in psychology have directly or indirectly contributed to society. To commemorate this special year, we would like to set up a PSY ALUMNI FUND.

The purpose of the Psy Alumni Fund is to support a Psy-connection Award:

Applying knowledge to improve human lives has been a major objective of psychology. Examples include:

  • a smartphone application that helps those with reading difficulties to improve word processing speed;
  • a book that analyses the psychological challenges faced by Hong Kong people nowadays;
  • a video clip that discourages the blind pursuit of slimness among high-school girls;
  • a public event that encourages pedestrians to pay more attention to their surroundings

There are different ways in which psychology can make an impact on our society.

The Psy-Connection Award is an annual prize that encourages the creative use of what is learnt in classroom settings to promote the welfare of humankind. This award is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in psychology in our Department. An award of HKD10,000 in total will be offered to the best project, which includes a cash award of HKD 5,000 and another HKD5,000 for implementation of the Psychology project.

After the 30th anniversary dinner held on May 19, 2012, we are glad that our alumni fund has gone up to around HKD60,000. However, as a Department, we have to count on the continuous support of our alumni to achieve the goal of keeping this award. We sincerely hope that more contributions from our fellow alumni could be added to the fund, which will be used to support creative projects for improving human lives.

Drops of Water make a river

To enable us to run the award for the next 30 years, we would like to call upon our alumni to support this fund. Your contribution would affirm the value of applying psychological knowledge to improve human lives.
